History of Kirtland Hills

Kirtland Hills was named after Turhand Kirtland who was the principal of the Connecticut Land Company and the judge of Trumbull County. Kirtland was recognized as a hero due to being a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and making peace with the Native Americans in the area. He was a brave and resourceful person who was well known for having a passion for justice.

Between the years of 1831 and 1838 Kirtland became the home for the Latter Day Saint movement when Joseph Smith relocated his church to the area in 1831. Soon after, the Latter Day Saints built their very first temple there and the church is now looked at as a historical landmark.

River Oaks, Kirtland Hills, Ohio

The town of Kirtland became a popular tourist spot in the 1990s thanks to the historic buildings located in the Kirtland Flats that were a part of early Mormon history. These buildings include the NK Whitney home and the Newel K. Whitney store.
