Located on the northeastern tip of Ohio at Lake Erie, is the beautiful Lake County, founded in the early to mid 1800s, it is considered by many as an ideal place to call home. Lake County derived its name from the fact that it sits on the great Lake Erie, which in itself is the primary reason why so many people move the this neck of the woods. When it was first founded in 1840, the population has been just under 14,000. Today, Lake County is just shy of 230,000 residents.

If water sports don’t interest you, try the Holden Arboretum, where bird watching is a great way to commune with nature. Other places to see in Lake County is the Western Reserve Model Train Museum, the Coulby Mansion and Pioneer Waterland & Dry Fun Park.

The Neighborhood

As you explore Lake County, the first thing you will notice is the fact that the people there are very friendly, from the Kirtland Temple & Visitors Center which some consider as an interactive museum, to many fine restaurants like Fanucce’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria and The Wild Goose Group. Golfers won’t be left out with the Manakiki Golf Course, or the Fairways, just two of several others, both located just off Interstate 90.

By many standards, Lake County is average in size, yet there are several towns to visit while you are there, like Willoughby with its welcome center, Mentor with the Agricultural Society or Kirtland and the Historic Village. Don’t forget to check out Vinerest and the Lake County Captains, or Fairport Harbor where there is never a dull moment at the Lake County Speedway. Of course no trip TOP Lake County would be complete without stopping by Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina at Mentor on the Lake.

The Infrastructure

If you don’t like big city traffic, you will love it at Lake County, because for the most part, traffic runs fairly smoothly. Getting from one end of the county to another is easy with Interstate 90. If you prefer to stay off the main highway, state road 2 will be just as effective, with a slightly less aggressive speed. For those who prefer others to drive, a reliable bus service awaits, including an express service all the way into Cleveland.
